The Stories…
Everybody has a story to tell. Cy’s many years of capturing those stories and weaving together memorable moments has lead to many notable achievements by his peers in the broadcast arena. A few stand out…
There is The Ambassador Frank Moore, the guardian of a river, a river that has stood the tests of time. Oregon’s scenic North Umpqua River flows 100 miles into the Cascade Mountains. One man fought and still fights for the natural beauty and creatures that call it home. Frank is 86 and has a multitude of congressional achievements in conservation. He can still be seen today on that swift river battling the current for a mighty Steelhead Salmon on the fly. His story was one to be told and landed Cy two Silver Telly’s for Best Documentary and Best Nature/Conservation in 2008.
“Kwan’s Dream” is a story of a beat down boxer in the Twin Cities area, struggling with addiction and bouncing from shelter to shelter. Cy was able to capture a moment in his life, striving to be a champion in and out of the ring. This won a Emmy Award for Best Sports Feature, National Press Photography Awards, and Minnesota Broadcaster Awards.
Of course there is no I in TEAM. In 2000, Cy moved to Minneapolis to work with the best writers and photojournalist in the country at KSTP-TV. The news business can be cut-throat, where storytelling takes the back burner to hard news and deadlines of the day. At the time, this was one of the rare stations where storytelling shined. Cy honed in his skills with coworkers of the same mentality, just telling great stories. In 2003 KSTP won National Station of the Year for Best Photojournalism and taking in many other national and regional honors.
